program, work with community mental health providers to improve assessments for clients on probation and planning with the Justice Management Institute as recent highlights for the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council.\u202f\u00a0<\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Fitzgerald discussed her work on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/viewfrom100.buzzsprout.com\/\"><span The\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dgcoks.gov\/administration\/criminal-justice-coordinating-council\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Douglas County Criminal Justice Coordinating Council<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, known as the CJCC, was established by the Board of County Commissioners in 2016. The process was the first to begin at the county level in Kansas. It was aimed at helping address the statewide backlog that has delayed numerous criminal cases in recent years due to the shortage of bed space at Larned and Osawatomie state hospitals.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cAs a county, with Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center, the courts, the District Attorney\u2019s Office, Sheriff\u2019s Office, we&#8217;ve all come together to try to see if we can get that system to happen in our jail, instead of having to wait for a bed to open up,\u201d Armbrister said on the podcast. \u201cHopefully this will keep these people from decompensating and just languishing for those 12 to 14 months waiting, and we are all deeply proud of it.\u201d\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Fitzgerald described her role as Criminal Justice Coordinator as someone who acts as a hub for different spokes among leaders in agencies involved in the criminal justice system, including law enforcement, the courts, elected officials, attorneys, mental health and criminal justice service providers and the community. She touted cooperation among agencies and groups that come together in the CJCC.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cOne of the biggest challenges is the issue of trust. We often hear the question, \u2018Does the public trust the system?\u2019\u201d Fitzgerald said. \u201cBut trust doesn\u2019t stop there. For the partners within the system, they also need to reach a point where they trust one another. That\u2019s where I come in \u2014 I\u2019m always on the lookout for ways to help build that trust and identify the barriers. How can I help?
